Chapter 12

“Pay up, baby!” Sarah spit into Jimbo McKinney’s face. “One fat asshole who owes me ten dollars!”

Jimbo was now dressed in short basketball shorts and a stained white wife-beater. He’d lost his van, his suit, and now, the bet.

“Yeah, yeah, bitch,” Jimbo mumbled. “As soon as I find my wallet.”

“Hey, Jimbo, look on the bright side,” Rothschild smiled. “At least you got some action tonight... from Mrs. Poughkeepsie!”

Sarah, Jenny, Jeremy, and Rothschild all guffawed. Poughkeepsie had been telling Officer Briggs to arrest Jimbo for twenty minutes now. He did not want to tell her Sheriff Matthews no longer let him make arrests after one minor accident involving a discharged firearm, so he sat, listened, and wiped streams of old-woman spittle from his face.

“Jane really got you good. You’ve got to hand it to her,” Jenny Hibiscus giggled. It seemed to Jeremy that his love was now having a grand ol’ time tonight, their disappointing dinner behind them.

“I’m gonna kill that bitch,” Jimbo said. “When I find my van, I’m gonna plow her right over with it.”

“Okay, apparently, our prick of a synth player decided to up and leave the band, so we’re now a four-piece!” Paul Score shouted into the microphone from on-stage before breaking into the timeless guitar line from “Time After Time.” Bernard Hook, accepting he had the least important role in the band, now played keys. His bass guitar sat sadly at the back of the stage, unheard, like every other bass in history.

“Ugh, this is my favorite song!” Sarah said, taking Rothschild’s hand. “What a great night!”

She dragged him onto the dance floor. Jeremy and Jenny wrapped around each other, as did every couple in the gym.

“Fuck Crazy Jane. Fuck Mrs. Poughkeepsie,” Jimbo muttered. “I’m gonna find some new pussy.”

By the gym doors, Poughkeepsie fell silent for the first time in almost half an hour, her ears perked.

“This is it, Briggs. The big, popular slow number,” Mrs. Poughkeepsie spat. “This is where we’ll really get them.”

“Barb, ma’am, I really have to get going. Officer Matthews has to be wondering where I am,” Officer Briggs moaned.

“In the name of the Lord, it’s a carnival of sin!” Poughkeepsie flapped to the dance floor, eager to bring God back to the gymnasium. Briggs took the opportunity to slip out the gym door, free at last.

It was Leslie’s idea to go to the cafetorium.

Alex could barely believe it. Leslie and Alex were behind the giant red curtain of the school’s small stage, cuddling on the backstage couch the actors hung out on between scenes.

He was going to lose his virginity. He could feel it. The weight tying him to loserdom would soon be lifted, and he could swim to the surface of having respect for himself.

Plus, he was in love, and they were here, together, at the spot where that love first flourished. He remembered practices for Arsenic and Old Lace, where the two would have backstage competitions to see who could blow Alex’s prop bugle the loudest without getting yelled at by the director.
